My little garden is progressing nicely after quite a few days of happily working on it. But as much fun as it is building it, I kind of wish it was all done and as mature as my vision for it so I didn't have to wait years to see it so. (I'm somewhat impatient when it comes to things like this). Many homes around my neighborhood have the most beautiful roses and shrubs climbing over fences and up porch posts, but not this house. Oh no, this house had nothing!

But now it has a short white picket fence, built by my husband. It divides the yard into two sections - one which will be landscaped because it can be seen from several rooms, the other will probably be left au natural. This side of the fence will have a flower and herb garden alongside.

We cut the finial off the middle post and put this little birdhouse there instead - it fit perfectly and adds some charm to the fence.

Along the back side of the fence will be a vegetable garden. I plan on building some raised beds for vegetables off to the left of the photo, but that project is further down my garden list so this little plot will have to do for now. Except, I was reading about vegetables last night and there are so many I want to plant that I may have to move those raised beds up the list because this spot is going to be much too small!

There's a lot of hard work involved in creating a garden out of hard desert dirt (I envy those of you who live where it's green), and I have the aching muscles to prove it. But still, I love it, regardless of the muddy shoes I have lined up next to the back door - it takes a lot of water to soften up the soil around here, and I had to get right there in it. Perhaps the next item on my buying list should be a pair of wellies!
